Hearing aid not working? Five checks before you call

No sound, whistling, weak sound, cutting out, Bluetooth trouble — the simple causes behind most hearing aid problems.

A behind-the-ear hearing aid

Most of the hearing aids brought to us ‘not working’ have a simple cause: a flat battery, a blocked wax guard, or a little moisture. Before you book a repair, try these.

1. No sound at all

Fit a fresh battery — peel the tab and wait a minute before inserting it. Check the aid is switched on. Then change the wax guard: a blocked guard is the single most common reason an aid goes silent.

2. Whistling

Re-seat the dome or earmould so it sits snugly. Check the tube for cracks. Whistling can also mean wax build-up in the ear itself, which needs a clinician.

3. Weak or distorted sound

Change the wax filter, brush the microphone openings gently, and dry the aid overnight in a drying kit.

4. Cutting in and out

Moisture is the usual culprit, especially in Mumbai’s monsoon. Dry it overnight and clean the battery contacts with a dry cloth.

5. Bluetooth won’t connect

Restart both the aid and the phone. If that fails, forget the device in your phone’s Bluetooth settings and pair again.

Still not right? Bring it in. We check, clean and fix minor faults, and coordinate manufacturer repairs so you don’t have to.
