Overview

About speech therapy at Shaba

Speech therapy is the assessment and treatment of communication problems and speech disorders. It is led by speech-language pathologists, often called speech therapists, who use structured techniques to improve how a person understands, speaks and swallows.

Who we see

Who this is for

  3. People who stammer, or whose speech is rapid and jumbled (cluttering)
  4. Adults and children with aphasia, apraxia or dysarthria after a stroke or neurological condition
  5. Anyone with swallowing difficulty (dysphagia)

How online therapy works

How it works

Four steps,one team.

  1. Assessment

We look at communication at home, at school or work — not a single symptom in isolation.

  2. Goals

Specific, meaningful targets the family can see and understand.

  3. Practice

Engaging, age-appropriate sessions built on repetition and feedback.

  4. Carry-over

Home activities so progress continues between sessions.

In their words

“I had no clue about my problem — why I was exercising and what the purpose of it was — but Shaba helped me overcome my stammering by making it understandable, and it was really effective.”

Questions

Before yourfirst visit.

What can cause speech and language delay?

Causes include neonatal problems such as prematurity, developmental conditions such as autism or specific language impairment, hearing loss, oral anomalies such as cleft palate, neurological conditions, and genetic disorders. A full list is in the patient guide.

When should a child be evaluated?

Children develop at different rates, but if a child is behind the usual milestones for understanding or using language, or is hard to understand, an evaluation is worthwhile. The milestone checklist in our patient guide is a useful reference.

Is speech therapy only for children?

No. Shaba works with adults who stammer and adults recovering language or swallowing after a stroke.

Can therapy happen online?

Yes. Goal-oriented online sessions run over Zoom or Google Meet. Suitability is discussed when you book.
