How a hearing aid works

A hearing aid has three basic parts: a microphone, an amplifier and a speaker. The microphone turns sound into electrical signals, the amplifier strengthens them, and the speaker delivers them to the ear — shaped to the pitches you find hardest to hear.

Modern aids are wireless: they connect to your phone over Bluetooth, stream calls and television, and adjust themselves as you move between a quiet room and a busy street.

Styles we fit

  • Receiver-in-canal

Small and discreet — the most common choice for mild to severe loss.

  • Behind-the-ear

Robust and powerful, for severe loss and for children.

  • In-the-canal

Custom-made from an impression of your ear.

  • Completely-in-canal

Almost invisible, for mild to moderate loss.

  • Rechargeable & Bluetooth

Charge overnight; stream calls and TV straight to your ears.

From test to fitting

  1. Hearing test

A full assessment in our sound-proof room tells us exactly what to correct.

  2. Choosing together

Your lifestyle, budget, dexterity and the look you want decide the style — not a sales list.

  3. Fitting

The aids are programmed to your audiogram and adjusted while you listen.

  4. Fine-tuning

The first weeks are for getting used to sound again. We adjust as you go, for years.

Common questions

Do I need two hearing aids?

If both ears have hearing loss, two aids usually help most — especially for following speech in noise and telling where sounds come from.

How long does a hearing aid last?

Typically five to seven years, depending on care. Regular cleaning and servicing make a real difference.

Can hearing aids be serviced if I bought them elsewhere?

Often, yes. Bring them in and we’ll check what can be done for your model.
